At the end of the day, Texas is big, independent, and rowdy. I had the pleasure of spending a lot of years there (11 when you count them all up), and always enjoyed Texas. From Big Bend, to Houston, to Amarillo to Tyler, Texas has as many facets as the best diamond you can buy. You can certainly find loads of tourist attractions, but you can also discover some out of the way gems like the Hagermann National Wildlife Refuge on Lake Texhoma. Texas has its own style of nationalistic pride, and whenever you see the flag, you feel some of it.
